When cremation affirms the belief in the resurrection of the dead, it is an appropriate Christian practice of honoring someone’s remains.  Similarly, when burial affirms the belief in the resurrection of the dead, it also is an appropriate way of honoring someone’s remains.  Most of us need visible and tangible actions as we are mourning the death of loved ones.  These outward actions, in the midst of the faith community, help us to give expression to inner experiences of faith and grief.

For many, a location for such experiences has been at a grave plot in a cemetery.  With the addition of the Memorial Garden, Kern Road Mennonite Church recognizes another option for families, friends, and other members of the deceased’s community.  As an act of financial and ecological stewardship, Kern Road Mennonite Church has established this space in the courtyard for the scattering and/or inurnment of cremains (ashes).   It has been envisioned as a place where family and friends of the deceased can come, individually or in groups, for times of remembrance and a place where the whole congregation can honor and appreciate the faith and legacy of those who have completed the journey of the earthly life before us.

The KRMC Memorial Garden is ...

  • a place where the family and friends of the deceased can come, individually or in groups, for times of remembrance.
  • a place where the whole congregation can honor and appreciate the faith and legacy of those who have completed the journey of the earthly life before us.
  • an act of financial and ecological stewardship whereby members can affirm their hope in the resurrection by being inurned or scattered on church grounds.

Cremains may be inurned in a small, enclosed niche in the columbarium or scattered on the KRMC property.

Niches are engraved in a  uniform font and style with the Name, date of birth, and date of death of the deceased. Those who have cremains scattered will have a memorial plate in the Memorial Garden.

Niches Cost $600 for one person, or $900 for two sets of cremains in one niche

Scattering has a cost of $100 to cover the cost of the plate
